Structured gymnastics classes for primary schools in the Basildon area.
South Essex Gymnastics Club work within the local community to provide structured gymnastics classes for primary schools in the Basildon area.
These have proven popular, with classes running weekly, rotating year groups half termly. In these sessions, fully qualified coaches lead a structured session touching upon basic fundamental skills along with gymnastic and apparatus work. Sessions typically last 1 hour per class.
We can also provide one-off sessions to groups if required. We can provide acrobatic or tumbling sessions for dance or cheerleading groups, or circus sessions as something a little different.
If you are interested in your primary school or group taking part in these sessions, please contact us.
Last year Felmore Primary School had the pleasure of welcoming gymnastics coaches from South Essex Gymnastics Club. They were extremely knowledgeable and both myself (class teacher) and the children gained a variety of skills. Children from all abilities were able to join in and challenge themselves like never before.

A safe and active environment for people of all ages, with plenty going on beyond the gym.
Working with enthusiastic young people to provide volunteering opportunities within their club. This initiative was set up to create confident young coaches that could see themselves with a career in sport. It was taken from the British Gymnastics pathway of the Leaders Academy for 11 to 16 year olds to be engaged with coaching.
This amazing pathway has seen over 120 volunteers through its doors, providing jobs for over 40 young people, with over 60 in volunteering roles across our three sites. South Essex have an incredible team of coaches that are passionate about sharing their knowledge and ideas with the next generation of coaches.
We have shown this by running regular training sessions for our volunteers on different pathways, to show the variation in the sport and help educate all areas to build a well-rounded coach.
Our Young Leaders also enjoyed their first reward trip to Colchester Zoo, generously funded by the Jack Petchey Foundation, to celebrate all their hard work and dedication over the past few years.
Rhythmic fundraising towards a replacement carpet:
Jack Petchey Award: the foundation was nominated for the Leaders Award, which celebrates our coaches over 18 and also brings in a further £1,000 towards the club.
In 2022 the Schools Partnership Programme was created. SEGC visited local teacher conferences to pitch the idea to schools in the Basildon area. As a result, in 2023 we visited 3 schools: Billericay Primary School, Felmore Primary School and Runwell Primary School. These coaches have been a huge support behind the schools programme and the running of the 6 weeks.
This resulted in some lovely feedback for coaches and children being talent spotted for MAG and WAG groups. We made a further link with our 4th school, Downham Primary School, in 2024, where Gemma and Max completed a 6 week programme working with Year 1 children and enthused them to become involved in the world of gymnastics.
Following the positive comments, we have had further interest from outside the area in school visits and hosting school events, both at SEGC and visiting. Cara led a CPD pathway with Eversley, taking coaches through the basics of supporting young children and the key skills needed to aid young gymnasts.
This partnership would not have been possible without the support of Active Essex. We were able to provide 5 primary schools with free classes for a 6 week rotation. Active Essex allocated £1,500 to support South Essex with this project, which went towards the cost of the classes, equipment used within the schools and travel expenses for coaches.
During a very strange time in the world, South Essex was coping with a pandemic and also keeping the club alive. Go Fund Me sites were set up to provide a small income for the club. Virtual quiz nights allowed club members to still feel part of the club, raising £320 with the help of Jack Holgarth hosting the event.
Crowdfunder and Sport England provided a huge support, with rewards for donations provided by coaches and local companies, partly funded by Sport England as a match promise. The Allianz Sports Fund, suggested by a parent of one of our members, went towards a new slide and supporting blocks used for SEN sessions. In 2021 the Cherry Tree family funded sensory equipment for our pre-school programme, with an additional £500 awarded that put coaches on further education courses, including our Young Leader pathways. Also in 2021, with no contact supporting allowed with gymnasts, Active Essex awarded £1,500 which bought 3 new supporting blocks for Gym 2.
South Essex is keen to keep good communication with Active Essex partners to help provide sport in the community at all levels, providing health benefits for those in the Basildon area. Funding opportunities arise at each event, and we will always be looking for the next support for the club and its ever growing community.
South Essex has seen some incredible gymnasts and coaches walk through its doors. These awards give us an opportunity to highlight some of their achievements within the community. South Essex won Club of the Year in 2022, with both Courtney Tulloch and Georgia-Mae Fenton nominated and awarded Athlete of the Year. Dave and Yoan Ivanov, along with Alexander Niscoveanu, were nominated for Junior Sportsperson of the Year 2023, with Shannon Archer and Max Whitlock shortlisted for Athlete of the Year. Shannon was awarded Top Athlete for her achievements at the Commonwealth Games.
Your environment, your potential, your opportunity.
South Essex Gymnastics Club (SEGC) emerged through the merger of Basildon, Castle Point and Magna Carta Gymnastics Clubs. Established in 1992 at a cost of £300k, the club's original premises were funded through extensive efforts, including fundraising, loans, and grants from organisations such as the Foundation for Sport and the Arts and the Sports Council.
Under the leadership of Rod Smith, Jeff Davis and Verity Adams, elite gymnasts from SEGC achieved remarkable success on the international stage over the next decade. Athletes like Natasha Hibbitt, Annika Reeder and Nicola Willis represented Great Britain at various championships, including the Olympics.
This success led to an increased demand for places, prompting plans for a facility extension. While Basildon Council granted outline planning permission, discussions in 2002 explored the possibility of the club moving to the proposed Basildon Sporting Village. In 2006, SEGC leased a second building, focusing on specialised equipment for individuals with special needs and expanding recreational programmes.
The club's commitment to inclusivity continued with special needs classes for local schools and the development of adult gymnastics and freestyle classes. Notable gymnastic achievements persisted, with athletes like Max Whitlock OBE, Danny Lawrence and Reiss Beckford representing GB at international events, including the Commonwealth Games.
In 2011, SEGC, in collaboration with Basildon Council, moved into new facilities at the Basildon Sporting Village, a significant investment supported by the club's own funds and grants. The club's role as a pre-games training venue for the London Olympic Games in 2012 highlighted its growing reputation. It hosted competitors from Ireland, Holland, New Zealand, Austria, Guatemala, the Czech Republic and Japan.
The departure of Rod Smith in 2008/2009 saw Scott Hann appointed as Director of Coaching, leading the club's day-to-day management. SEGC's success continued with Max Whitlock's achievements at the London Olympics, marking a historic moment for GB Men's Gymnastics.
Organisationally, SEGC transitioned its charitable status from the Castle Point Olympic Gymnastics Club in 2009, becoming South Essex Gymnastics Club Ltd. The club operates as a charitable company, overseen by an Executive Board and a Director of Coaching responsible for discipline-specific head coaches.
As a charitable organisation, SEGC is dedicated to providing gymnastic opportunities for all levels and abilities in a safe, friendly and fun environment, encouraging gymnasts to reach their full potential, whether participating recreationally or as international competitors.
Over the years, South Essex Gymnastics Club has achieved many prestigious awards and titles. Travelling all over the world, our elite gymnasts compete at the highest level against many different nations to earn medals in a variety of apparatus finals and become champions. Our younger gymnasts also work immensely hard, which has led to great success in all of our age groups, from under 9 up to senior age category.
Supporting the parents and carers who make it all possible.
SEGC are always looking for ways to improve our services to all our members, communicate better and leave you all with a positive experience. We have been doing some exciting work for the unsung heroes, you, the parents and carers.
After a long-anticipated wait, we are pleased to announce that we are ready to start our collaboration with the amazing WWPIS, Working With Parents in Sport.
This is an amazing organisation that is dedicated to helping the dynamic of club, parent, coach and athlete be as proactive, efficient and positive as it can be, and we are now ready to start rolling this out to you.
Every parent has access to the WWPIS website, which contains so much information. Please take the time to check it out.

Creating a safe environment for every gymnast.
It is our aim as a gymnastics club to create a safe environment, give all gymnasts attending the club a fulfilling and enjoyable gymnastics experience, and to provide opportunity for members to achieve their gymnastics potential and feel good about themselves.
